Neighbourhood Guide
What to know about Brookside.
Brookside is a southwest Edmonton neighbourhood bounded by the Whitemud Freeway to the west, Whitemud Creek ravine to the east and the North Saskatchewan River valley to the north, accessed via Whitemud Drive at 53 Avenue. Annexed by Edmonton in 1960, it was planned as part of Riverbend and included in the 1969 Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan. A 1968 re-plot preceded rapid building, and the name refers to nearby Whitemud Creek.
Brookside is mature and low density, mostly single-detached houses on larger lots along tree-lined streets. About half the homes predate 1970 and nearly all predate 1980, reflecting 1960s and 1970s design such as bungalows and split-levels. Apartments and row housing sit north of 53 Avenue, and owner-occupancy dominates.
Brookside School is an Edmonton Public elementary for Kindergarten to Grade 6; confirm your address with the division's attendance finder, as boundaries change. A pipeline right-of-way south of 56 Avenue connects to ravine and river-valley trails, and a City bridge at 142 Street crosses Whitemud Drive to Brookview. Shopping is a short drive away; there is no LRT, the nearest being South Campus/Fort Edmonton Park on the Capital Line.
For buyers, Brookside offers established homes, mature streets and direct river-valley and Whitemud Creek trail access, with quick links to the university and downtown. The trade-offs are real: the freeway and ravine hem the community in, access funnels through the 53 Avenue junction, and freeway noise affects edge properties. For sellers, that settled setting is the main draw.
