Get to Know St. Albert's High Schools

For a lot of families I work with, the schools are the reason they're looking at St. Albert in the first place. Here's a plain rundown of the high school options.

Why Families Ask About Schools First

I've helped enough families move to St. Albert to know how the conversation usually starts: not with square footage, but with "what are the schools like?" It's a fair first question. St. Albert has a long-standing reputation as a strong community for education, and for families with teenagers, the high school options are a big part of the appeal.

There's genuine choice here — public and Catholic systems, English and French, and an alternative pathway for students who don't thrive in a traditional classroom. Here's who's who.

The Public High Schools

Bellerose Composite High School — Part of St. Albert Public Schools, Bellerose is a comprehensive high school offering a broad range of academic and elective programming designed to prepare students for a variety of paths after graduation.

École Secondaire Paul Kane High School (PKHS) — Also in the public system, Paul Kane is known for a caring, respectful culture and strong programming, and it carries a well-regarded reputation among local families. It offers both English and French-immersion streams.

The Catholic High Schools

St. Albert Catholic High School — Known for solid academics, this school also offers strong Fine Arts programming, Career and Technology Studies (CTS), and second-language options for students in the Catholic system.

École Secondaire Sainte Marguerite d'Youville (ESSMY) — A Catholic, bilingual school with a Full French Immersion program, a strong technology focus, and a growing CTS program. A good fit for families who want French education within the Catholic system.

The Alternative Pathway

Outreach High School — Not every student does their best work in a conventional classroom, and Outreach exists for exactly that reason. It offers a flexible, self-paced environment for students who need something other than the traditional structure — a genuinely valuable option that not every community provides.

More Than Just Classrooms

One thing I point out to families: St. Albert's approach to education stretches beyond the school building. Students have access to the city's recreation facilities, museums, arts spaces, and community programs, and there's a real culture here of valuing learning. The city consistently reports high rates of high school completion and post-secondary education among residents, which tells you something about the community these schools are part of.

That community matters. Strong schools tend to sit inside neighbourhoods where families are engaged, where kids can walk to a friend's house, and where the amenities support a good childhood. That's a big part of what people are really buying when they move here for the schools.

A Practical Note for Home Buyers

If a specific school is driving your search, do two things before you fall in love with a house:

  • Confirm the catchment. Attendance boundaries determine which school a given address feeds into, and they can change. Verify the current boundary with the relevant school division rather than assuming.
  • Check program availability. French immersion, specialized CTS streams, and certain programs may run at some schools and not others, and popular programs can have enrolment considerations.

I'm always happy to help you line up the right neighbourhood with the right school, so the home and the education fit together.

This is general community information. For current attendance boundaries, program details, and registration, contact St. Albert Public Schools or Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools directly.
