Neighbourhood Guide
What to know about Hillview.
Hillview is one of the 27 neighbourhoods known collectively as Mill Woods. Mill Woods was a land bank consolidated by the Province and annexed to Edmonton in 1971. The City bought the land and has acted as the developer since that time. Hillview is the neighbourhood immediately to the north of the Mill Woods Hospital.
The Hillview neighbourhood is bounded by major roadways while interior streets follow curvilinear and keyhole patterns. Overall, the objective of the roadway network is to provide for the efficient flow of traffic to and from each neighbourhood and, at the same time, to minimize heavy traffic volumes inside the neighbourhood. A number of walkways through Hillview make for convenient walking or bicycling from place to place.
Most development in Hillview occurred during the 1970s although some building activity spilled over into the 1980s. The existing residential development is a mix of single-detached homes, row housing and walk-up apartments. A neighbourhood shopping plaza is located to the east of the school and park sites are close to most of the neighbourhood's higher density housing. The neighbourhood also has two elementary schools and park sites. The neighbourhoods of Hillview and Greenview are members of Woodvale Community League. The community league was formed in 1980.
The Hillview neighbourhood is situated on the only hill in Mill Woods and because of the significance of this topographical feature the neighbourhood was named after it.
The City of Edmonton open-data release of the 2021 federal census records 3,430 residents in Hillview. The count is filed under neighbourhood number 6300, in the Mill Woods and Meadows district and the Karhiio ward. The census figure is the 2021 count, not a current population.
School designation for an address in Hillview comes from Edmonton Public Schools or Edmonton Catholic Schools, not from this page. Each division publishes an address lookup because attendance areas change. The City neighbourhood profile describes parks, housing and streets. It is not a school-boundary map.
